Workshop Information
Join artist Keisha Rowe in a 3 x 2.5hr session clay workshops where she will demonstrate basic hand-building techniques using air-dry clay. Please note that working with air-dried clay differs from working with fired clay, and the finished results have a craft finish rather than a fired ceramic finish. Clay is an excellent material for practicing and learning foundational hand-building techniques. Unlike fired clay, air-dried clay does not require a kiln for hardening, so it is not waterproof. In this workshop, you will explore various construction methods such as pinch pots, coiling, and slab building. These techniques serve as a solid foundation for working with other types of clay. Join us and hone your skills in your preferred method of construction using this versatile and accessible material.
Session 1: Play: Pinch, Coil, Slab! Working with the clay and exploring hand-building techniques.
Session 2: Make: Learn about contemporary ceramicists. Make your own vessel in a larger scale.
Session 3: Decorate: Painting and decorating your vessel with acrylic paints, sealing with PVA glue and varnish.
No previous experience is necessary - these clay workshops are ideal for beginners and will encourage positivity and creativity in a laid-back atmosphere. You will be guided and supported by a tutor to explore your ideas.
Please note that air dry clay is washable but come dressed comfortably and prepared to get your hands a bit messy.
Hot drinks/refreshments will also be provided for the sessions.
These workshops are for ages 18+. and are limited to 10 people maximum.
If you have any questions about these workshops, please email Drew at events@duncanplace.org

Keisha Rowe
With a background in printed textiles for fashion and a current focus on illustration, Keisha finds joy in the process of creating. Drawn to bold colours, black outlines, and surface patterns, she expresses herself through digital drawing on her iPad. Recently, she has ventured into working with clay as a means of diverging from the reflective nature of her drawing practice.
Having obtained a teaching diploma specializing in Art and Design in 2019, she is driven to inspire the next generation of creative thinkers throughout Scotland. Recognizing that the traditional classroom environment wasn't aligned with her vision as an educator, she now freelances with museums/galleries and charities with an ethos of strengthening the community.
Teaching, educating, and facilitating are at the core of her practice, serving as a stark contrast to her own experiences within the education system. She advocates for process-oriented environments and encourages the embrace of "mistakes" as valuable learning opportunities, challenging the ideals of perfectionism that she herself finds difficult to practice. In her workshops, her goal is to foster safe and courageous spaces where individuals can immerse themselves in their creativity.
