Carer’s Policy

Summary

Duncan Place recognises and values carers and the contribution they make to the health and wellbeing of the people they care for. We wish to support, as best as we are able, any individuals who require a carer and the carers when they attend events or classes at Duncan Place.

How we define a carer

A Carer is someone who provides support to another person who due to illness, disability, a mental health issue or an addiction cannot cope without their support. This may be a paid or unpaid role.

Aims

This policy aims to ensure that there are clear and consistent guidelines for carers and the individuals they support when attending any of the community events/classes that we provide at Duncan Place.

Our statutory obligations

This policy is designed to complement our statutory obligations. Under the Equality Act 2010, people who look after another person who is elderly or disabled are protected against direct discrimination or harassment. Carers are protected by law as they are classed as being ā€˜associatedā€™ with someone who has special Protection from Discrimination. Duncan Place is committed to supporting, developing and promoting diversity and equality in all its practices and activities and aims to establish an inclusive culture free from discrimination and based on the values of fairness, dignity and respect.

Carer & charges for attendance at events/classes
  • If an individualā€™s situation means that they only require their carer in order to get to and from the event/class, then the carer is welcome to wait in our reception area during the event/class. If appropriate, the carer may be able to sit at the side of the class - this will depend on the type of event/class and space available. There can often be limited spaces and we thank you for your understanding with this.
  • If an individualā€™s needs are such that they require their carer to be with them during an event/class at Duncan Place, then the carer will be admitted to the event/class free of charge. (Example: the carer is assisting the individual by supporting them to follow the workshops leaders guidance to make a clay pot. The carer is not making their own clay pot.)
  • If the individual does not require support in the event / activity, and the carer chooses to join the event/class and will be participating in full (Example making a pot in a Clay class or an item in our Craft group), then they will be charged at the normal entry price. This is to ensure that as many members of our community are able to attend as possible, as we have limited spaces for our events/classes. If the activity is a ā€œbook in advanceā€ one, the additional space must be booked or we cannot guarantee entry.

If the carer requires a receipt to allow them to reclaim the cost via an expenses system, it is helpful if you can let us know this in advance.

Reasonable Adjustments

Duncan Place Community Hub are happy to consider reasonable adjustments for any individual circumstances. Please contact us with as much notice as possible and provide details of what may help.
